Dear Colleagues,

Below is a sample of a trial version of ASCII-Cyrillic for
Ukrainian. Since comfortable reading and typing are of paramount
importance, it deviates slightly from the Russian version.

For example, I am using  y  for Ukrainian \cyryi (shape \"\i); if one
encounters a Russian \cyrery (say in a bibliography item, it will be
rendered not as  y  but as '{ery} a representation that will remain
valid for every Cyrilic language.  Similarly for all non-Ukrainian
Cyrillic letters.

Eight bit fonts include quite a few diacritic characters.
The sample includes:

      '[<<]  for \leftguillemets
      '[>>]  for \rightguillemets
      '[--] for \nskip
      '[---] for \mskip

The Ukrainian hard sign is an apostrophe (=\rightsinglquote)
and is being rendered by '* as in obov'*'azki below.  If
the hard sign is the ASCII right quote rather then the 8-bit character
(which is occarionally not present), one gets obov'''azki in
Ukrainian ASCII-Cyrillic.

Bear in mind that ASCII-Cyrillic is designed to be a 100% faithful
representation.  And also to be usable beyond TeX and independant
of TeX.

Comments welcome!

       Best regards,

              Laurent Siebenmann
