Dear Colleagues,
All languages with which I am familiar, Russian excepted,
have a reasonably convenient ASCII representation. TeX has
been a major contributor on this front with its linear
ASCII notation for mathematics. In spite of the narrow
limitations of the ASCII standard, TeX's math notation is
both intelligible and typable. TeX has also contributed an
ASCII format for the western european languages --
featuring Knuth's accent macros \', \`, \^, \", etc. The
precision of these ASCII formats is perfect while the
readability and typability are acceptable although
imperfect.
For some time I have been toying with a scheme that can
provide an ASCII format for Russian with just the same
virtues.
To convince you that this is a hopeful possibility, I have
converted to ASCII several recent Russian language
contributions to CyrTeX-ru@vsu.ru and I attach them below.
I invite comments/enquiries on the readability, typability
and accuracy of this ASCII encoding that I currently call
ASCII-Cyrillic.
Recently I have programmed a converter in TeX and will
release it when obvious misfeatures have been remedied
with your assistance!
