PS. Let me repeat that list of my deviations from
older ASCII representations of Russian, but with
*three* typos corrected:

"zh"                   ===> "'z"
"e"="\\\"e"            ===> "'o"
"h"="x"="{h}"          ===> "x"           **
"c"="ts"="{ts}"        ===> "'t"
"ch"="{ch}"            ===> "c"
"sh"="{sh}"            ===> "w"
"sch"="shch"="{sch}"   ===> "'w"          **
"'"="\""="{\\cdprime}" ===> "q"
"'"="\""="{\\cprime}"  ===> "h"
"e"="\\'e"             ===> "'e"
"yu"="ju"="{yu}"       ===> "'u"
"ya"="ja"="{ya}"       ===> "'a"          **

Note that, on the left, backslash is an escape
character (of emacs-lisp?). Hence the barbaric
\\\"e is really the familiar and acceptable TeX
\"e when typed.  But { and } will show.
