4) In case you are using Emacs or XEmacs, try the cjk-enc.el file
which is part of the CJK package
(ftp://ftp.ffii.org/pub/cjk/devel/cjk-current.tar.gz). This is
similar to 3) (i.e., Emacs uses multiple character sets), but all
the nasty details are done automatically behind the scene.
cjk-enc.el may be of interest also if you need more character sets,
especially CJK scripts.
